H1N1 Statement from John E. Biegel, III, MA, Health Officer - June 4, 2009
6/4/2009 12:00:00 PM
As of 4:00 pm Thursday, June 4, 2009.
Statement from: John E. Biegel, III, MA, Health Officer
Please be aware that this statement may change as the situation unfolds.
Over the last several weeks, we have observed an increase in influenza-like illness throughout the Clifton school system. There is evidence that there is novel H1N1 influenza in the Clifton school system. Currently there are six confirmed case and two confirmed clusters of novel H1N1 influenza in the Clifton School System. This is not a reason to panic but a reason to remain vigilant with your personal hygiene.
The Clifton Health Department has been working closely with the Clifton Board of Education regarding novel H1N1 influenza. The Clifton Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have advised that there is currently no reason to close any of the Clifton Schools and there is no reason to keep children home from school unless they are sick.
The confirmation of a case is not a reason to panic but a reason to remain informed and vigilant with your personal hygiene. You can limit the spread of flu viruses by engaging in frequent hand washing, covering your cough and sneeze, and staying home from work or school if you are sick. Hand sanitizer that is at least 60 % alcohol based may also be used if you do not have access to hand washing facilities. However, hand sanitizer is not a substitute for hand washing. In addition the Clifton Board of Education is cleaning all schools on a nightly basis.
We need your help and cooperation to limit the spread of this illness. If you have any of the following signs or symptoms please seek medical evaluation from your health care provider. Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, difficulty breathing and conjunctivitis. If you do not have signs or symptoms there is no reason to see your healthcare provider regarding novel H1N1 influenza.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Clifton Health Department at (973) 470-5760.
