Registration will be accepted from the date of this brochure's release. Instructional classes are open to both Residents and Non-Residents, on a first come, first served basis; however, there are separate class fees for Residents (R) and Non-Residents (NR). Proof of Residency will be required for all class registration. Early registration is strongly recommended. Program fees must be paid at the time of registration (cash, check or money order). Make checks payable to the Clifton Recreation Department. The City will charge a $35.00 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Enrolled participants should attend the first class as scheduled – no confirmation is mailed to you. Late registration will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee (no pro-rating). Children must meet age requirements listed for the programs by the first day of the class unless program description indicates otherwise. The Clifton Recreation Department does not discriminate on the grounds of race, color, national origin, age or disability to participate in our programs. A request for refund must be made in WRITING five (5) business days (M – F) before the program begins, except for trips which require ten (10) business days. Refunds will not be issued for 1-day workshops, seminars, or special events. Refunds will NOT be issued once the program starts. Full refunds are granted in the event that a class is full or canceled by the Recreation Department. All refunds will follow the Finance Department's bill-paying schedule and will be issued by City check (no cash refunds). Allow 4 – 6 weeks for refunds to be received. A $5.00 service charge, amount may vary for specific programs, will be assessed per participant / per activity / per session for all requested refunds. Individuals may have the option of receiving credit instead of a refund. In this case, no service charge will be issued.
The Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel, postpone, relocate or combine any program due to insufficient registration or other causes that may affect the health, safety or welfare of the program participants. A full refund will be issued for programs canceled by the Recreation Department (allow 4 – 6 weeks for processing return). Every effort will be made to notify registrants of program cancellations. If schools close due to inclement weather, all daytime classes will be canceled until 5:00 p.m. The decision to conduct evening classes and programs will be made by 4:00 p.m. To find out the status of evening programs call the Recreation Weather Hotline, (973) 470-5680. When public schools are closed, any recreation sponsored programs conducted at public schools are automatically cancelled.
If a program has reached maximum capacity, you may leave your name and phone number on a waiting list. If a spot becomes available in that program, the Recreation Department will contact you immediately. You will only receive a phone call if an opening becomes available.
The mission of the Clifton Recreation Department is to provide the community with a wide variety of youth, adult and family activities that offer our citizens the opportunity to use personal leisure time in a viable, productive and gratifying manner at various facilities that provide both active and passive atmospheres while maintaining historical and environmental awareness.
Please be advised that participants involved in any department programs or special events are subject to being photographed or video taped. Any photos & video footage obtained may be used in the future by the City of Clifton for program guides, brochures, pamphlets, flyers, news releases and CATV presentations without an obligation to provide compensation to those photographed or videotaped.
Nothing kills a recreation class faster than participants who wait until the last minute to enroll. There is a point at which courses must be canceled due to insufficient registration. Please enroll early!
Parents are welcomed to attend their child’s class on the first and last day. Please do not remain in the classroom after dropping off your child. This is in your child’s best interest, as continual interruptions tend to affect participants’ attention spans and inhibit the establishment of peer relationships. Thank you for your cooperation.
In keeping with our program goals, we encourage fun for all of our participants. Certain rules are necessary to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all individuals. Participants are required to follow all established rules & regulations. If misconduct persists and rules are not followed, appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken. Brochures are available at the Recreation Office in City Hall, the Community Recreation Center, Main Memorial Library, Allwood Library and are distributed to the students through the Clifton schools. Non-residents can receive 4 consecutive program brochures for only $10.00 per year. Mail us your name, address and phone number along with a $10.00 check and a note entitled “Brochure Request” or stop by our office in City Hall to complete a mailing form and pay $10.00, check or cash, to begin receiving the next quarterly brochure as soon as it becomes available.
If you are planning a party and are in need of some entertainment ideas, or if you are looking for some place new to go and spend some family leisure time, the Recreation Department has two books in the office with ideas and places to visit.
Gift certificates are available for Clifton Recreation Department run programs & workshops (excluding special events). Give family & friends the fun and enjoyment of participating in one of our classes. Call the office at (973) 470-5956 for more details.
There are 37 City parks and 1 County park in Clifton. Parks are open daily from dawn to dusk. A list of their locations and amenities can be found on the Park Page of this website. Please help to keep our parks clean and safe.
A current list of the most applicable rules and ordinances can be found here or a more complete list can be seen by visiting the Online Code of the City of Clifton. Individuals found in violation of park rules can be fined up to $500.00.
Permits are required for organized activities. Requests for permits must be made in writing through the Recreation Department. Request forms may be obtained at the Recreation Department or downloaded here. Depending on request and organization requesting permit, a fee may be associated with field use. Request for Weasel Brook County Park must be made with the Passaic County Park & Recreation Department.
Planning a picnic? Let the Recreation Department help! The Recreation Department has a picnic basket available for rent to help make your next neighborhood picnic or family reunion a smashing success. The cost is $20.00 plus a $50.00 refundable deposit (upon return of equipment in good condition and on the scheduled date). The kit includes:

Located at City Hall behind the Lester Herrschaft Center is a regulation sized bocce court. This court is available for use by residents. Use your own supplies or rent a set of bocce balls from our department. The fee is $10.00 with a $50.00 refundable deposit (upon return of equipment in good condition and on the scheduled date).
In addition to the picnic basket & bocce equipment, the items listed below are available for rent. All rentals require a $50.00 refundable deposit (upon return of equipment in good condition and on the scheduled date):
