COME WALK WITH ME

“Walk and Talk Thursdays”

2005 has been our kick off year to a healthier Clifton . The Recreation Department has put “Good Health” at the forefront or our goals this year and will continue into 2006. We are hoping that the citizens of Clifton will join us in our campaign toward better health. It is no longer enough to talk about it, it is now time to step up to the plate and hit the ball out of the park.

Besides the many fitness and health classes, we have a walking club that meets every Thursday at the front steps of City Hall at 5:30 p.m. for a 2 mile walk. You do not need to pre-register and there is no fee. Come with your family, friends or co-workers. It is time to get healthy. It is time to eat wise and exercise.

SCREEN FREE SUNDAYS

Screen Free Sundays is a Citywide Campaign to encourage families to start working together toward getting fit and healthy. The premise of the program is to turn off all screens, including: TVs, Computers, Gameboys, Cell Phones (other than making calls), etc. for a portion of a Sunday (or Saturday). Clifton is the “City That Cares” and it is now time for each of us to start caring about the health and well being of our families, our friends and ourselves. There are 5 basic steps to the program.

Step # 1: Making A Family Commitment

Make a decision as to when the screens are going to be turned off. Start with a few hours and work towards making it through the whole day.

Step # 2: Registering

Register with the Recreation Department and pick up your “Screen Free Sunday” Kit. In doing so, your family will be on its way to a healthier future.

Step # 3: Productive Use of Leisure Time

You need to plan what you are going to do during the time in which the screens are off. We encourage you to select something that requires movement; however, it is your choice. Take a family walk or bike ride, play with the family pets, work in the garden, take a class, play a board game or read a book; just keep the screens off.

Step # 4: Put It In Writing

This is a two-part step. First, have everyone in the family sign the Family Pledge. Secondly, keep a family journal. Record how things change from week to week and the benefits or challenges your family has. When you look back after 6 months you will be surprised to see the improvements you make as a family.

Step # 5: Reward Yourself

Either use the recommended goal dates in the kit or establish your own; but don’t forget to reward yourselves for meeting your goals. Make it part of the family fun.
