Storm IDA Update

Free Legal Help Available for New Jersey ida Survivors 


A free legal service is available for people facing legal issues due to the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

Residents in Bergen, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Union and Warren counties affected by the disaster who are unable to afford a lawyer can request free legal assistance from the Legal Services of New Jersey’s (LSNJ) statewide hotline at www.lsnjlawhotline.org. The online application can be submitted any time.  

Residents can also call the LSNJ hotline at 888-576-5529 (888-LSNJ-LAW). Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This service is a partnership between the New Jersey State Bar Association, the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division and FEMA.

Types of free legal assistance available include:

  • Help securing FEMA and other government benefits available to disaster survivors
  • Assistance with life, medical and property insurance claims
  • Replacement of wills and other important legal documents lost or destroyed in the disaster
  • Counseling on creditor-debtor problems
  • Counseling on landlord-tenant problems
